I read this article (http://www.nytimes.com/2007/07/22/business/22refine.html?pagewanted=1&_r=1&th&emc=th) in the New York Times Headlines this morning that sheds an interesting light on the subject of high gas prices in America this summer. What do you think?

I don't really believe that article one bit. It all comes down to that the oil companies want to make more money plain and simple. When oil companies are making record profits obviously its not nearly as expensive to make gasoline as they make it out to be.

We all know the only thing TRULY effecting gas prices are the oil companies them selves.
We also all know that the REAL people running the US are the big shot companies. Come on, the gas companies help presidential candidates in their campaign so that come the day of their presidency, they will let the oil companies do what they want. There is no other excuse for high gas prices than the oil companies just trying to cash in every damn chance they get. Come on, you make practically NOTHING but profit when it comes to oil; can you honestly believe there is EVER a time when they HONESTLY need to raise gas prices?
Money, money, and more money. That's all it really comes down too!

haha this is why I usually skip reading the NYTimes Daily Headlines. I wouldn't read them at all except that USA Today doesn't have a feature to send the news to my e-mail every morning and I would completely skip news all together otherwise :P But man, you guys should read some of the stuff that comes out of this newspaper. It's so horribly slated sometimes (though Minneapolis's Star Tribune can be even worse). There are so many loop holes in reporting the truth (such as failing to mention other truths) :facefault The technology section's usually pretty good though :P
As far as what I think on the gas prices story, I think problems at an oil refinery DO have an impact on prices. It just isn't right for them to be acting like victims in the situation. With as much money as they make it wouldn't be impossible to take some time and fix things without having to raise the prices so much. It's kind of obvious that the problem isn't just with refineries if they've begun the trend of keeping prices high all year round except on holidays and then raising them again higher (where as they used to do the opposite). That shows a bit more measure of control then they are claiming to have. The other thing is that, isn't the majority of our oil imported anyways? Why should problems here have such a huge effect? According to the all-knowing Wikipedia by 2005 imports were twice as much as what was being produced here. Hmmmm.

I fully admit that huge Megacorporation run a lot of shit, and that the only reason gas prices are high is because we pay them.
I really have no problem with that.
The bigger, and more evil the corporation, the better.
