Project Name: The Poisoned Rain of Agharti

Genre: Drama, Sci-Fi (apocalyptic)

Info: 8-minute Cel animation for my 2007 Honours Project.

Synopsis: Where once stood the revered city of rain, now an inhabitable toxic wasteland.

The city of Agharti was once one of the few places left unaffected by the world-wide drought. Before the war, Agharti traded clean water to other countries. Enraged by the price of water, the nations attacked the city, anticipating its surrender of clean water supply. Soon after the war, for reasons unknown, the rain of Agharti turned into poison. To escape the war and toxic rain, the citizens of Agharti were driven to live underground to survive and protect the remaining clean water supply.
The Poisoned Rain of Agharti follows two siblings, Nuru and Karin venturing from their underground dwelling to explore the war-torn ruins of the surface. Their adventure is disrupted when the poisoned rain falls and enemies return to search for Agharti's hidden water supply. Nuru and Karin must brave the toxic rain and enemy soldiers to reach the safety of their underground city.

CHARACTERS & AUDITION LINES

Nuru
http://www.altheaaseoche.com/agharti/gallery/Nuru-full.jpg

A 13-year-old who lives in a secret underground city. He takes care of his little sister, Karin in place of his sick mother and his father who is a scientist abroad searching for a cure for the rain.

Nuru intelligent and wants to be a scientist like his father, often travelling to and from the surface and his underground dwelling to collect samples of water and dirt for his own research.

AUDITIONS CLOSED

Karin

http://www.altheaaseoche.com/agharti/gallery/karin-full.jpg

6-year-old Karin has lived underground since the beginning of the war. She does not remember what the surface looks like and only knows about the pre-war era through stories the elders tell children. She looks up to her brother and doesn't like to be apart from him.

She is a very expressive girl; she does not speak many words but she cries, laughs and gasps. Her lines are often short but filled with emotion.

Vocal range: High

Audition Lines

1: From the underground labyrinth, Nuru and Karin emerge from the surface. Karin sees the sky for the first time. She looks up to the sky; it is bright and overwhelming. When her vision adjusts to the light she gasps in delight.
mmh............................. (gasp)

2: Running
(panting)

3: Nuru offers his hand and invites Karin to go further into the ruins of the city. The two start running with excitement and delight towards an adventure. (Looking for a very cute, childish but unforced laugh)
(laughing)

4: Looking for a cute, heart-breaking little-girl's cry. Sequence is about 15 seconds long. Her pain is both physical (from the rain) and emotional.
(crying) It hurts! (more crying)

The Soldier

The main antagonist of the story, he is an obstacle between the childen and the entrance to the underground city.

He wears a technologically advanced suit that makes him appear cyborg or robot-like (less human) to protect him from attacks and the contaminated air. Personality wise, he is a lazy, inexperienced soldier who is a conscript and just wants to do his time then live a peaceful life.

Vocal range: Low

Audition Lines

1: The soldier heads towards the explosion to inspect the cause of it when he hears an unusual noise.
Hmmm...?

2: Inspecting his surroundings, he responds to his team mate over the radio.
Ah, just some ghosts.

Radio

A one-liner part. He or she is a fellow team member of the soldier, possibly the captain of the squad. Character personality open to interpretation.

Vocal Range: Any

Audition Lines

1: Something wrong? Over.

Citizens of Agharti

Just need some general "panic" lines for the first scene when the city of Agharti is attacked by other countries. The whole city is on fire. The city siren is blaring in the background. Enemy planes fly over. Everyone is in panic. People are trapped under fallen objects. Everyone is trying to get out.

Vocal Range: Any (Mainly looking for females now)

Audition Lines
(note: I'm adding some more new ones in because I've got excellent ones for the ones I had up before)

4: (coughing and running)
6: (crying from bewilderment)
7: (screams from objects falling)
11: Who would do such a thing...?
12: Oh nooo!
13: Oh God....
14: This can't be happening...

BIG UPDATE!

There's been BIG changes to the script. The script is finalised and I've added new parts, although they are minor and are only 1-2 lines.

Soldier (deep voice)
Radio (ambiguous)
Citizens of Agharti (both)

I've also made Nuru a bit older... so his voice doesn't have to be as high.

This looks like it'll be awesome! I really, really, really want a part in this!

I'm at school right now, but I would love to work on this later on today!

It's not very professional to pine for a part to the producer. Just makes them feel guilty if you don't end up being cast.

This sounds and looks (from the few images you've provided) really great!

I'll be sending an audition this evening. When is your honours project due?

katakami
05-29-2007, 08:08 PM
I'm happy with any expression of interest. :hug I'm a student myself so I understand.

My animatic (animated storyboard) is due monday so I'm hoping to get some auditions for it by Friday or Saturday. I will most likely cast some people for the animatic. Even if I don't get auditions for some parts before monday, I'll be editing my animatic anyway so if I find someone in the next week or two I'll replace my woeful attempts with thier good ones. (At the moment I'm doing all the voices and my accent is horribly warped. Y_Y)

And so if you get casted for the animatic and everything's dandy and my supervisors are happy with it, I may also cast you with my final animation as well. If you don't get casted for the final animation the two main reasons will probably be sound quality and matching accents. Y-Y sorry...

Honours project is due October this year... ideally I'd like the sound done by latest July because most of the hand animation is going to be done in June-July and I'll be animating to the sound/voice acting.

I had sent some auditions in for this but what I see here is a bit different than what I auditioned for. Do you have enough to go on from me?

Oh yeah I forgot to add the list of people who've auditioned on here. Sorry!I'll add it on after this post.

So yes - Aibrean, thanks so much for auditioning. Karin's lines are a lot shorter in the new script so I do have enough to go by your previous audition. =)

Thanks so much for everyone's interest. Looking forward to receiving all your auditions!

ooo cool. I love those films and the story line you described so far for your animation does seem to be very reminiscent of that. This looks like it's going to be great. ^_^ Considering a large majority of the people here are from the UK or USA are you looking for a Standard British dialect or a Standard American?

Hmm... I think as long as there's good enough reason for someone not to be casted, then the producer shouldn't need to feel guilty right? :sweat although, admittedly, I would anyway. Lol.

I always think, if it's for you, you will get it. I'm looking for people who fit the parts like a glove. "They'll just sound natural and bring the character to life" (quoting my supervisors. >.< )

I'm a prince looking for my cinderellas.

OK! someone's lacking sleep. :whoops: *runs to bed*

Hmmm... to be completely honest I'm a bit lost with accents (considering my own english is warped - half american half aussie.) For politcal reasons... I didn't really want to indentify Agharti as a certain part of the current world map. :/ So that makes it hard for me to decide what accent to go with.

With the auditions I've received so far, my supervisors are a bit.... weary about the American accents. BUT for me, I think if your acting is great and you really sound the part, sound quality is perfect then you're it. In the end, the accents have just got to match. (So I guess if you can do both British and American accents that'd be a bonus...?)

Sorry for being so ambiguous! :facefault

So I'll get those auditions in shortly.

All I mean is it puts unessesary preasure on the person doing the casting. It's as you said; if you're right for the part, that's what matters.

For those of you who were enquiring what universal accent is:

"an acent that is neither fully identifiable as American, British or Australian. it could have elements of all three but is not the stereotype of any."

That's all I can give you, sorry. I haven't been able to find any sound samples. I'm not too fussed about it. At this stage, because I haven't casted any of the roles yet, whoever will be casted as Nuru will determine the accent I choose since he has the biggest part. So if it's Nuru with American accent, then it'll be American accent... despite my superV's cringing. Ahk... they'll get over it. XD

Aibrean - I think you did submit a line in British accent. If you want to send in the rest, that's fine. =)

I've added usernames to the list on the first post from whom I've received auditions from and I've got some fantastic ones. If you've submitted something and your username's not there, let me know.

Keep an eye on the first post for updates. I've also added that I'll be casting the "understudies" which means you'll appear in the animatic (particularly in the final animatic version) and you have potential to be in the final animation. (Depending on supervisors opinions, matching accents and if I don't find anyone else suited for the role between now and the final deadline in mid-late June.)

Thank you guys so much again! For your time and efforts. :)

Another huge thanks to more entries I've received over night. I'm so astonished at how fast you guys actually got your entries to me. It's really helped a lot.

Preliminary round (Animated Storyboard cast) will be announced in 2 hours(midnight my time.).

I will be casting main actors AND understudies for Karin and Nuru.

I will need to re-audition Karin with more lines because I may need to test accent matching. I have chosen three candidates for this re-audition which will be announced at midnight.

All cast will be notified by email that they have been chosen for the part.

Main actors will receive the script and the rough cut of the animated storyboard this weekend. If the main actor is unable to complete recording for any reason, I will contact the understudies and check for availabilities then send the script/animatic to them if they are willing to fill the role.

On a final note - I'm still on the look out for more female voices for the citizens, particularly deeper/lower female voices.

Ok! all for now.

Thank you to all who auditioned for your time, effort and interest in this production. As much as I wanted everyone who sent in auditions to be a part of it, there were varied reasons why I couldn't give it to you.

Some of you asked for feedback... sorry I've got a few things due next week so I'll be a bit tied up. After that I might be able to email you individually but I can't promise I'll get around to it. For now here's my general comments:

The main reason was sound quality - for all parts (particularly for Karin); I had a lot of good potentials and excellent talent who were let down by a little or a lot of noise ( this is probably the same reason as I never got casted for productions I auditioned in before. ^^;; I have a crappy mic.) As faint as the noise was for some... unfortunately I can hear when your audio stops and starts because of the noise and particularly for Nuru and Karin's roles, I had to look out for that. Also I know some of you did noise removal - unfortunately it distorts the sound and I can hear it quite clearly.

Besides sound quality, the other most important thing was the delivery of lines. The actors chosen pronounced their words clearly and could be understood. Also nailing the right tone and pace; in other words, the acting was what impressed me the most with who I've casted.

The voice had to not only sound "natural" and "unforced" but in character. Some of the auditions I received were done by people with enormous talent but the voice didn't suit the character's image. Those who were chosen really brought the character to life.

So ends my general comments... and again, I can't thank you all enough for taking your time to send auditions my way. Auditions are still open, particularly for female citizen roles until Mid-June.

Cheers,

Althea (katakami)

I will be organising the second round for Karin auditions partly because you were all so good I had trouble deciding and partly because I need to see who can match Nuru (Cyrus') accent. (It's... quite... interesting and miiight prove difficult. :sweat )

I will send you a part of Cyrus' sound file as soon as I get his permission. Then I will post up new lines for Karin. They will be her more wordy lines. (Although she only really speaks about maximum 4 words at a time. lol)

I'll try auditioning for Nuru today. That is, if you don't mind a girl auditioning?

katakami
06-01-2007, 03:25 PM
I've had a few girls audition for Nuru so there's no wrong in a girl auditioning. I originally imagined I'd end up with a girl doing Nuru's voice.

However your audition will have to be towards the Final Animation. Nuru has been casted to Cyrus for the animated storyboard and that won't change as long as he accepts the part. Same goes for the Soldier, the radio and Karin (who will be chosen out of the three mentioned above).

I have decided to close auditions for Nuru after Monday. I'm quite happy with it and so far I've received good feedback about Cyrus' audition. I may also close auditions for the other parts some time next week after I receive feedback for my animatic. However parts for the citizen still remain open.

So:

Nuru Auditions for Final Animation closes Monday 4th June, 12:00AM EST.

Last chance to Audition for Nuru's part in final animation THIS WEEKEND
