Obtaining video files

Okay, I just got done looking through the necessary Help Center topics with the word "video" in them (did this through the board search feature).

And Fiona C's post about the different programs and sites that can be used for fandubbing is great and all, but it did not give me the answer I'm looking for.

(I'm doing this before I go through many many pages in Google looking for "Video Capture Programs"/"Video Capture Freeware")

Is there a good freeware program out there that can be used for obtaining videos through, let's say, a DVD?

I know I could probably find a clip of a certain anime or something out there somewhere, I'd just like it if I could get my own from my own sources. That way I have exactly what I want.

I don't have much money...let's rephrase that, I have no money at my disposal to buy a new program which is the reason I'm looking for a freeware.

I can use the list posted by Fiona C for basically everything else, this is just the one problem I have.

Then maybe after this, if it isn't too much trouble, someone can teach me how to compress a video file. haha.

Videohelp.com (http://www.videohelp.com/) is pretty useful when it comes to finding out how to convert video. For converting from DVD to Dvix I'm fond of The Fair Use Wizard (http://fairuse.free.fr/lang_en/), simple to use and free.
