Hollywood is notorious for buying rights then amking movies that deviate majorly from the plot or have almost nothing to do with the original story. My question is are there any good movies that keep to the plots of the books without major edits ?( and I don't count PoA),.

True true. If you want to see book destruction, watch Ella Enchanted. What the hell was that crap?

Hmm...I don't think there is any movie that keeps exactly to the plot. They are adaptations after all. LoTR won so many Oscars but they had to cut out practically half of the book and the whole thing still mangages to be 9 hours long.

Book destruction...
The Bourne Identity. What the hell happened there? What screenwriter was smoking what when he wrote that from the book?

Lord of the Rings was excellent, even though several scenes I thought were important disapeared.

But if you really want to see a good book adaptation (and you don't mind Black and White ~.^) Go to your library and rent To Kill a Mockingbird. An excellent movie and book.

Incidentally while on the topic, did anyone else see the trailer for "The Polar Express" when they went to see Harry Potter (or any other recent kids movie)? XD That is SO cute. I loved that author as a child. ^.^ His picture books were simply beautiful. I know I'm SUCH a nerd, but I have to see it. XD I audibly squeed at the theatre too. ^^; oh my. XD

Movies i feel that are loyal to books

-Lord of the Rings Trilogy
-The Last Unicorn
-To Kill a Mockingbird (Even if they did change a bit)
-Harry Potter: Philophisor's Stone
-Harry Potter: Chamber of Secrets

Movies I feel that were totally disloyal and stupid

-Harry Potter: Prisoner of Azkaban
-Ella Enchanted

Movies in which i predict to be AWESOME because I love the books XP

-His Dark Materials
-A Series of Unfortuneate Events

Movies I predict/feel they may leave out some things

-The Last Unicorn: Live Action

Out of all the books to movies, the one I hate the most is HP: PoA.
Ruined my fav, book =/

hmm well I was looking for good movies to watch but if we're gonna put in bad ones.
MATILDA
Why was it set in America!?!?! ( yet Trunchball is still english o-0). IT was a bit too slapstick fo rmy tastes, I do find it funny in a way as Roal Dahl hated America ;3

Movies I like:
Harriet the Spy -but never having read the books I don't know if it's loyal.

Dark Materials has already been a sell out play and Pullman has been developing the film for a while. Although I heard they changed the end.

Recons the American Pie guy will direct.

The Chronicles of Narnia is alo being made into a big screen version. I used to love those books and the BBC did an amazing job with the series ( which kept to the books). SO it'll be interesting to see if they do with the film.

Oooooh awesome! thanks Azure *looks at sites* Narnia as a movie will kick some serious butt XD

Oh, while we're talking about bad adaptations, did anyone see Disney's version of A Wrinkle in Time? Uck. XP The ending was mussed.

Timeline
A movie that really dumbs the book down. If you were mad at Harry Potter:POA you would be outraged at this crapfest. Instead of 37 hours, they have 2 hours. Whole sections of the book are gone. Characters are changed. Some characters never appear. Important plot lines from the book are never mentioned. etc, etc...
Poor Michael Crichton. What did they do to your wonderful book?

I think Lord of the Rings is one of the most successful adaptations I've seen, especially for a project of such a large scale. They really understood the differences between book and film, how to ADAPT and not just put the book on screen. Sure, a lot was cut, but it was cut well and everything fit together as a film.

I thought Prisoner of Azkaban was a much more thematically successful adaptation than Sorcerer's Stone and Chamber of Secrets.

Ooh, and Celena picked out a good one with To Kill A Mockingbird. Awesome book, awesome movie.

How about the new Peter Pan movie? Except that I haven't read the book... But it's a really awesome movie and I've heard fans of the book say it's a faithful, but not slavish, adaptation.

I'll be very much surprised if His Dark Materials gets made into a successful film version. The complexity of the work really requires three films, but I don't think the books don't hold enough widespread popularity for studios to back a three film venture.

What about Fight Club? That was a pretty spectacular book to film. I don't think they could have done better there.

YES I DID!

OMG I forgot about that movie..

Yeah I will probably see that sometime but I think it would of been better if they made the characters real people instead of computer animated...o_O But maybe if I see the movie I'll think differently...

Oh yeah here's a movie thats TOTALLY different from the book:

A Walk To Remember

Yes.. the movie is still very good but gosh it's so much DIFFERENT than the book! WAAAY more things happened between Jamie and Landon in the book they didn't show in the movie. It made me a little mad because those scenes in the book were so sweet and touching and it shows how much closer they really did become...RAWR.

But, like I said. They're both very good, but also VERY different.
