View Full Version : Viruses
Now, I get one or two popups every time I come onto the forum. Not that big a deal, even though I've talked to a few people who don't get them.
I am, however, concerned about what happened just today. I come onto the forums and got hit with about five or six different trojan viruses, some of which my virus detector weren't able to clean or move (most likely from a nasty pop up). Is ANYONE else getting these issues, or is it just a bad problem on my end?
Thanks :D

I have antivirus and firewall plus using firefox so don't get popups or virii however i wouldn't expect it, not much help I'm afraid. I think we need someone to respond to this who has no internet protection at all. Some questions however:
What version of windows are you running?
Are you using Internet explorer or another browser?
What antivirus software are you running?
Do you happen to know what the virii and trojans are called?

It's, more than likely, an issue on your end.
I currently run my computer with no firewall whatsoever [... Maybe I shouldn't admit this. Ah,well] and my anti-virus [Norton] is long-expired, so I have some free stuff, but they don't really offer much help. I do, however, run spyware stuff regularly.
I don't have this problem you're talking about. You probably need to run your antivirus and spyware-detection programs to fix this. It's always good to run things like that regularly, lest you have problems like this.
What version of windows are you running? XP
Are you using Internet explorer or another browser? IE, yup
What antivirus software are you running? McAfee
Do you happen to know what the virii and trojans are called? Nope, didn't take note of 'em.
If it happened on other sites I wouldn't be making a post here, but it's ONLY on this site that it's ever happened. I do virus and spyware checks pretty regularly, too :\
Well, I haven't installed anything to make any popups come up, so I'd really do a spyware search if I were you.

Are your XP updates up to date do you know?
Ah, well that's the first virus internet explorer...just kidding.
McAfee...one of the best, unusual that it couldn't clean the virii. If you go into McAfee it usually has a history as to what they were. We're not having a go it's just odd that no one else has this problem and yet you only seem to have this with this site. :-(
Checked the logs, all my definitions are up to date and everything, and scans were just run today actually and both were clean.
The viruses I got today were as follows (listen in the "Detected As" column):
JS/Wonka
Exploit-ByteVerify x 3
Exploit-WMF
Aparently they came off of not just webpages, but zip files that got popped up and even a video.
Hopefully this is just a one time thing, and only for me :\

Ok if I remember rightly the wmf exploit should be fixed by updating xp to the latest microsoft patches http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/Bulletin/MS06-001.mspx and select the relevant update, this should prevent it happening again, it could be that the rest occurred as a side effect of this, not sure what else to suggest immediately but if I come up with anything else will let you know.

I'm with peanut on this one. It sound a lot like an IE exploit. However, if you don't have a good SW/HW-based firewall on your home network, I would strongly recommend one.
