View Full Version : Getting started with Audacity

Here's a short guide to get you started using Audacity, a piece of free software used for recording and processing audio.

Setup

Audacity can be downloaded from the official website (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/).

As of now, 1.2.4b is the latest stable release of the software
and 1.3.0b is a beta version available for experimentation.

After you install Audacity, you will also want to install the LAME encoder as well. This will enable you to export your audio as .mp3 files, which has become a de-facto standard for audio among the AVA community. The latest LAME encoder can be found at this website. (http://www.free-codecs.com/Lame_Encoder_download.htm)

I am currently using the "LAME MP3 Encoder 3.96 Final" version that has worked flawlessly for me so far. You'll want to download this file, and unzip the lame_enc.dll file into your Audacity program folder. (probably C:\Program Files\Audacity 1.2.4 if you used the default install settings.)

After this, run Audacity, and select "Edit->Preferences", click on the "File Formats" tab, and Press the "Find Library" button in the MP3 Export Setup box. Now select the directory where you unzipped the lame_enc.dll file into, and select the lame_enc.dll file. Now you are ready to start recording!

[B]Start Recording
---------------

Make sure your microphone is plugged in, and press the red circle (record button) and record something. Press the yellow square to
stop recording. Press the green triangle button to play back the audio.

If you want to play back only a portion of the audio, select the portion of the audio in the "Audio Track" window you want to play by clicking and dragging using the left mouse button. Editing the audio in audacity is just like editing text. You can Cut, Copy, Paste and Delete the selected audio using Ctrl-X, Ctrl-C, Ctrl-V, and Delete respectively. Subsequent recordings generate new audio track windows. Note you can cut and paste audio from one window to the next. Also, Undo and Redo are available as well by using Ctrl-Z and Ctrl-Y respectively.

You can close the "Audio Track" subwindows not currently in use by clicking the [X] in the upper left corner of the subwindow.

The magnifying glass can be used to zoom into, and out of sections of the audio in case you want to manually remove any small pops or other nuances in your audio.

Noise Removal
-------------

Chances are, your recording will be a bit staticky and will require a little cleaning up. Audacity provides a feature to do this as well called Noise Removal. Noise Removal is a two-step process.

First make a roughly three second recording of silence using your microphone (e.g. record and don't say anything). This will be used as an example for Audacity to learn the noise characteristics of your microphone as well as the ambient sounds of your surroundings. Next select the entire audio track, then choose "Effect->Noise Removal.." and press the "Get Noise Profile" Button. Now you can delete your recording of silence, since Audacity is finished recording it, and it won't be needed anymore.

Note that this process needs to be repeated every time you re-start Audacity.

Now you are ready to remove noise from actual audio clips. When you record you audio clips, it's a good idea to wait half a second before speaking and after speaking in order to provide some buffer space when working with the audio. Now record yourself speaking.

After this, highlight the entire audio clip, and select Effect->Noise Removal. Usually the noise removal amount slider is set to a good value, but you can test how different values sound by playing with the slider and using the "Preview" button. After you have found the best value, you can press the "OK" button to commit the results.

Usually this works well, but in some cases there may be a small pop near the end of your sample. Look (or listen for) for a small spike in the near the end of the audio track. Highlight it and delete it.
This is one of the reasons to record a little silence at the start and end of your samples.

Normalization/ Amplification
----------------------------
The next step you will want to do is to run volume normalization on your audio. This will help to make your audio more consistent in volume with other people's audio clips, and will also help to remove any initial and final pops in your audio.

Highlight the audio track, and select "Effect->Normalization". Select both the "Remove DC Offset" and "Normalize Maximum Amplitude to -3dB"

If any portions of you audio are too soft or too loud after this, you can always highlight those portions, and adjust their volume using the "Effect->Amplify" option.

[B]Other Effects
-------------
You will probably want to add echoes or other special effects to your audio at some point in the future. Here are some features of Audacity that I'm sure you will find very useful.

"Effect->Change Pitch": Some people have a really incredible vocal range, but for those of us who don't, or those of us who feel like working outside our range, there's the change pitch feature. The wonderful thing about Audacity's implementation of the feature is that it changes the pitch without changing the speed of the audio. Again, this feature only alters the selected portion of the audio.

"Effect->Echo": Adds echos to your samples. Set the delay to a low value (0.05) if you feel like talking like a transformer. Set the delay to a higher value if you want to announce a Monster Truck Rally. Decay determines how slowly the echoes fade out. Sometimes this feature can be very slow to compute. Another alternative is to use the "Effect->Delay" feature, which also produces echoes, but allows you to specify a maximum number of echoes to speed up the processing. Myself, I always use "Effect->Delay" feature for echoes.

"Effect->FFT Filter": Fast Fourier Transform filter, this is effectively a graphic equalizer for your sample that allows you to attenuate and amplify different sound frequencies in your audio. Think of it as fine tuned bass and treble adjustments. Click on the blue line to data points. Then drag the data points up and down to specify the amplitude adjustments for those portions of the spectrum. This feature can be useful for making a voice sound more distant or close, and can also be used to make it sound like the voice is over being spoken over the radio.

"Effect->Fade In/Out": This can be used to remove any initial pops at the beginning and end of your audio. It can also be useful to manually remove any small pops in your audio, but fading out a tiny section of audio up to and into pop, and fading back in after the pop.

In Conclusion
-------------
At this point, you will probably learn more by experimenting with the settings than anything else. Good luck, and have fun!

I would like to understand...about using "effect>>noise reduction" on Audicity.

It seems simple enough but even when you filter out less noise, it seems to make your voice wav. sound "digital". What am I doing? (same thing happens when I create a mp3 from audicity and convert it to goldwave to use noise removal)

Well to be honest it's not that good, Make sure you get the biggest sample of noise you can. Also try recording higher quality and check your mic set up.
Final thing you can do is change recording volumes.

This tutorial is fantastic. After read Klaymen1’s tutorial. Every time you re/install Audacity or change mics you have to select your microphone. Go to Edit, Preferences the first tab is Audio I/O, under Recording Device select your microphone.

Hey, I just installed Audacity yesterday and I'm already having a wave of issues. It shuts down in the middle of play back, the recordings have a bit of noise in them, but that might be my mic.... Any suggestions?

thanks for the wonderful tutorial :D
i am using audacity alright but the fact that my singing line always seems to "shrink" a bit after i recorded it really bugs me.
it never goes in time with the accompaniment.. i tried time-shifting and adding silences to synchronize them but i am just wondering whether there is a much easier and more straight-forward way of doing it?

thanks :)

Having problems trying to get the LAME MP3 working. It won't allow it for some reasons. Plus, I can't unzip it.
Can I have some help please?

Russ

What do you mean that you "can't unzip it"? Does it say that it is corrupt? If so, try downloading again.

Animate84
02-03-2008, 11:39 PM
No it's not corrupted and does download easily. It's just when I open it, I don't see the supposed unziped enc, only the journal part, nothing else. And I not so sure of how to save it to Audacity since it keeps saying after I go in preferences and did the next step. The followimg pop-up tells me it is seperate and I am now confused.

Hope this does make sense. Sorry, if it doesn't.

Russ

I would try downloading it again. Maybe you got a bad link. You do not "save it to Audacity." You put it somewhere you can find it later, and then when you export an MP3 in Audacity, it will ask for the LAME encoder.

What OS are you using?

Animate84

OS X

Audicity 12.6.

Hmm I can download it, but when I try to install it it exactly says:
--------------
Error creating registry key:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.AUP

RegCreateKeyEx failed; code 5.
Access is denied.

Click to Retry to try again, Ignore to proceed anyway, or Abort to cancel installation.
---------------

If I click Retry it just pops up again and does nothing. Same thing happens when I click ignore too. So thus it forces me to abort. Has this happened to anyone?

EDIT: Never mind, problem is fixed :)

What version of Windows are you using? You may need to download a version that's appropriate to your version of Windows. If it already was the appopriate version, download it again and try installing again. If it still doesn't work, you might have better luck asking at the Audacity's help forum:

I tried to download lame 3.96.1, but all I get is a folder where there are really weird pictures. I'm afraid I've messed up my computer, it mentions anti-phishing. What do I do?

Hazel Nut

also, how do I delete it?

Russ

It is extremely unlikely that you have messed up your computer. How did you try to download LAME? What link did you follow? What kind of mention of anti-phishing do you see?

Hazel Nut
10-29-2008, 03:30 AM
I'll try to recount my steps...I downloaded lame off of the link in the initial post...I was a bit confused, when I saw the folders, so that up folder button, and that's when I saw all these weird pics (ex.-some of it was porn. That's when I was wierded out) I went up more, and I saw the name of the folder was 'antiphishing', so I tried to delete it, but it didn't work. Now, I just want to delete and maybe try again, but with some intructions or something:sweat Sorry if this doesn't make any sense, I totally suck when it comes to computers

Do you have an IM account? Skype, Yahoo, AIM...? This would be easier to help you there. You can check my contacts for how to reach me. I'll be online for a bit longer tonight.

I'm not sure what you mean by "so that up folder button."

Do you share this computer with anybody else?

Hazel Nut
10-29-2008, 03:44 AM
no, I don't have any of that, sorry.
Sorry, that was a typo. I meant I pressed that 'up folder' button, you know, the one with the folder and a green arrow pointing up?
Yes, I share this computer with my siblings.
Do you know how i could delete the file? Thx for the help.

If it's really a file, you should be able simply to drag it into the trash. But I suspect that any porn you have there might well have been downloaded by one of your sibs...

If it's really a file, you should be able simply to drag it into the trash.

That may not be the case. I have encountered some files that refuse to delete, mostly temporary files or files from a poorly made game that my brother got as a present. Anyway back to the point, I'm not sure if we can post programs but you should try the free program Unlocker. I was recommended it by a Computer Magazine and my friend. Once you install, just right click on the file/folder and click Unlock on the dropdown menu. It then should be able to delete. Here the site:

http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/

Hope that helps. If not, a virus scan might fix it.

Hazel Nut
10-30-2008, 03:00 AM
No, I'm sure my sibs wouldn't do that (they ain't that type of people :sweat)
So, I have to download something else?

If you go to the website there should be a button that talks about the lame encoding, you click that and download the file according to the instructions. It is reccomended though that you save it in a place where you'll find it always without it being a distraction (My Documents, Desktop, etc...)

Once you do you should right click the mouse and there should be (deoending on whether you have a PC or Mac) a button that says WinZip, or Unzip as an option to the zipped folder. It will make you a copy that's not zip in a folder (or it may just be the file itself).

You then go to Audacity and save a file, it'll tell you to find your lame file. Go and find where you placed the replicated file and click it. It should work and once it is then you may throw the file away, until you get it to work on Audacity then you can toss it in the Recycle Bin.

I hoped that helped you a bit ^^

Question.

Before I use noise removal, the recording is rather staticky but of rather nice quality.
Afterward, however, the recording seems to sound more hollow, more like you're talking in a microphone rather than actually talking to someone face-to-face.

Any way to fix this?

LullabyeLaura
05-31-2011, 01:48 AM
Metazoa: When I used Noise Removal, I could kind of even it out messing with the controls (the Frequency smoothing, mostly). However, you will most likely still have that "hollow" sound, just a bit lessened. The only way to get rid of it completely would be to get a new mic. It doesn't have to be a super expensive one. May I ask what kind you're using right now? Ie, built-in laptop, headset, etc.

Metazoa
05-31-2011, 01:54 AM
I've had it for about a month and I've already forgotten what it's called. Hold on.
"Logitech-Labtec-Desktop-Microphone-600"

I've dropped it once... or twice... or a few more times, but nothing's really changed with the sound.

LullabyeLaura
05-31-2011, 02:02 AM
Ahh, I see. That type of mic is usually intended more for voice chatting and gaming than Voice Over work. Although if you're against buying a new mic, a pop filter may help. And unless you dropped from a high place, I doubt that could have hurt it too much.

Metazoa
05-31-2011, 02:16 AM
A pop filter?
Time to show off how much of a noob I am and ask what that is.

LullabyeLaura
05-31-2011, 02:33 AM
Haha, it's fine :) Asking questions is how you get answers!
A pop filter (http://www.instructables.com/image/FMG3RAUGD0QVTY4/Microphone-Pop-Filter.jpg) is something that you stick in front of your mic to keep huff, puff, "Puh", and pop noises from being recorded. It cleans it up pretty nicely. But if your problem is that the mic is picking up other background noises, then I'm afraid this won't help. You'd need something similar to a porta booth (http://www.harlanhogan.com/images/portaboothFullFront.jpg)(it's like a mini recording booth) that will shield the mic from any noises other than your voice. The only problem with this is that it's expensive to buy, and a little pricey to make because of the pyramid foam. I'm sorry if it seems like I'm pushing you to buy a mic >.<
