Hey! Fiona, here, how ya doin'?

K, so, I've been noticing a lot of the same questions cropping up, eg, "Which site serves background music?", "Where can I get SFX?", "Audio Editors?", "Where can I get video clips?"

Now, this isn't by any means "THE definitive guide", so, chances are, I'll have missed a few things. If you spot something that you know of another resource for, put up a link in this thread.

So, here it is: Where to find what and stuff like that!

Audio Editors:
Okay, so this is one of the most sought after things I see. Sound Recorder is nice, yes, but frequently, producers look for high quality -- and Sound Recorder just cannot deliver. Plus, it's damned difficult to use for mixing.

EDITED: http://www.adobe.com/products/audition/main.html - Cool Edit is now called Adobe Audition. Find a crack at http://www.cracks.am/ . Just ignore the porn ads :p [/edit by TamTu]

Second best is Goldwave for recording and cleaning up lines. It's only got a trial version currently available, but hey, it works.

http://www.goldwave.com/

Next up is Audacity. This one is better than Goldwave if you want a decent audio mixer. It has a simple, clean and user friendly HCI. The recording facilities aren't too bad either. But it's noise reduction feature is darned difficult to use, which is a bit of a downside.

http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

However, it IS freeware, so, you don't need cracks, nor do you need to pay a penny for a full version.

And for those wishing to (attempt) making karaoke files of their own:
http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/audio/vremover.htm

AnalogX doesn't do too bad a job. But some times, it DOES botch the job completely.

Background Music:

Common radioplays and fandubs are those of the Sailor Moon series. If you're looking for music for Sailor Moon, go to: http://www.sailormusic.net/
For the "Pretty Guardian" stuff, go to: http://www.eternalwhiteprincess.com/pgsmmusic.htm for downloads.

Most producers can get their music through other resources. For example:

BitTorrent, if you have the software:
http://www.mininova.org
http://www.demonoid.com
http://www.torrentportal.com
http://www.thepiratebay.org
http://www.torrentspy.com

For game music, you can also turn to Blue Laguna: http://bluelaguna.net/pages/selectmp3.php --> They have a lot of Final Fantasy OSTs, as well as orchestral and piano arrangements, and OSTs for other games such as Kingdom Hearts, Chrono Cross, Lunar Silver Star and Tales of Symphonia.

For fan remixes of game music, OverClocked Remix (http://remix.overclocked.org/index.php) is worth a shot (thanks for the reminder, Yun), as is VGMix (http://www.vgmix.com/song_list.php).

(http://gh.ffshrine.org/soundtracks.php) Galbadia Hotel (http://gh.ffshrine.org?r=13042) offers a large range of tracks from animé and video game OSTs. It's fairly new, but it's getting larger every day. Give that a shot, too.

Yunnie also suggests RealityLapse.com (http://www.realitylapse.com/) for lesser known animé BGM. ^^

You can also use Peer to Peer filesharing systems to download music (this, in fact, is my ally, and I highly recommend [sp?] it; WinMX): http://dld96.winmx.com/281553512/winmx331.exe

And mIRC is good for this too, if you know where to look:
ftp://ftp.areti.net/pub/mirrors/mirc/mirc612.exe

A further resource is Anime Karaokes.com, which, according to Katie, has a large range of karaoke bgms available. <3 (I'm just checking it out, now, lol.) So, yeah, worth a visit -- it'll save you having to use vocal cuts.

ALTERNATIVELY:

If you have concerns about using animé/video game OSTs in the background of your project, there is another option open to you --

Creative Commons (http://creativecommons.org/). This is a non-profit organization which offers music that has flexible copyrights -- that is, an artist can allow his or her music to be used for commercial or remixing use (though some only allow sampling [using only a very short clip of the music] or sharing [as opposed to use in commercial/remixing]). Most of the time, you can therefore use this music, so long as you credit the artist that created it.

Buying OSTs:
Jing has suggested that some lesser known animé series may not have OSTs up for download, therefore it might make more sense to try buying it. Therefore, I'm including this section for any suggestions of sites where you can get good value for money buying OSTs.

~Yes Asia.com: http://www.yesasia.com (http://www.yesasia.com/)
~CD Japan: http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/index.html (Suggested by Seishiro)

Download Accelerators:
Those on a 56k dialup find these particularly useful, though there's no reason why people on other connections can't benefit from them.

My reccommendation (sp?) is Download Accelerator Plus.

http://www.speedbit.com/DAP7/Default.asp?

Lame Encoder:
A problem has sometimes arisen with people being unable to encode MP3s because Lame Encoder DLLs are missing. So, here's a little linkie to help out.

http://www.generationwebx.com/webtools/downloads/lame-3.93.1.zip

Players:
Should be pretty obvious what these do. They playback your video and audio files.
http://www.winamp.com/
http://www.divx.com/
http://www.real.com/
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/

And Windows Media Player frequently comes supplied with any Microsoft Operating System.

Spyware / Malware Removal:
K, so there's a lot of buggers out there who want to invade your computer with nonsense so they can track what sites you visit and even bug you with ads. However, there are some who do it for the heck of causing you some bother.

One such group is "CoolWebSearches", who hijack your homepage to one of their sites. The following software very neatly removes it.
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/cwshredder.zip (http://www.spywareinfo.com/%7Emerijn/files/cwshredder.zip)

Another personal reccommendation (sp?) is Ad-Aware 6.0. This searches your computer and allows you quarantine as well as remove the troublesome buggers.
http://lavasoft.element5.com/software/adaware/

Sound FX:
The first website I'm gonna give has been one of my favourite allies in the past when working on productions.
http://www.a1freesoundeffects.com/

You can also try: http://www.ljudo.com/

There's a bunch of other SFX websites that offer free sound fx at high quality:
http://sounds.wavcentral.com/effects2.htm
http://www.koumis.com/soundfx.htm
http://www.soundrangers.com/sound-categories.cfm
http://www.sounddogs.com/start.asp
http://www.audiolicense.com/sfx/default.asp <-- suggested by Lirifox. *hugs to you <3*
http://www.findsounds.com/ <-- suggested by Rpnara

Video Clips:
For fandubbers, another resource -- videos!

Sailor Moon clips can be found here: http://www.millan.nu/sailormoon/multimedia/dramatic/

You can also get the full Pretty Guardian Episodes via SSUK:
http://www.metabee.co.uk/ssuk/pgsm.php

And for Final Fantasy fans:
http://www.ffx2.net/?id=fmv
http://www.ffx2.net/?id=videos

You should also be able to get hold of episodes and clips via the BitTorrent links given above.

Video Editing:
Virtual Dub. I know many people who swear by it. It doesn't gain any brownie points with me, since I don't know how to use it, but.. *shrug*... maybe you can figure it out. ^.~

http://heanet.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/virtualdub/VirtualDub-1.5.10.zip

Plus it's freeware, so... it's at least better than other pieces of software that nag you to register.

The folks at Goldwave have made their own video editor available -- http://www.goldwave.com/

It's just a demo, though, and will only convert 40 or so seconds of video, which is a bit of a downside, considering that the HCI is pretty user friendly.

Also try: http://www.adobe.com/products/ (yeah, same address more or less where you get Adobe Audition) to download Adobe Premier. You might need a crack, so see above, under audio editing facilities.

WebServers:
For those looking for servers for their websites.

FREE:
~ Geocities. ( http://www.geocities.com/ )
Yeah, okay, they constantly loose peoples' files, but it's relatively easy to use for any net n00b.
~ Freewebs. ( http://www.freewebs.com/ )
Notoriously slow for uploads and downloads (unless you have the paid WebZoom extra) Certainly userfriendly for building a website. Also has two settings -- beginner and expert.
~ Angelfire. ( http://www.angelfire.lycos.com/ )
Relatively user-friendly. Quick and easy to set up. But they don't like direct linking.
~PhotoBucket.com ( http://www.photobucket.com/ )
User-friendly, and used frequently to host image files, since it allows direct-linking (yay!). Avatars and sigs are commonly put here.
~MadeInMusic ( http://www.madeinmusic.com/ ) [Now EuropaMP3.org]
These folks earn major brownie points from me <3. This website offers webspace, and your own special page for your OWN music (for all those singers and musicians out there ^^). True, it's all in French, but they have a wee translatory-thing up on the top-left hand corner. Only other downside is that downloading is reserved for registered folks, but you CAN stream the music, which is good.
~FileFront (http://www.filefront.com)
Another file server which runs along the same lines as YSI and MegaUpload, but your file stays there indefinitely. Won't be moved, won't be deleted. They're quite strict about copyright violations, though, apparantly.

SHORT-TERM:
If you only need webspace for a few days, you can also upload to:
~YouSendIt.com ( http://www.yousendit.com (http://www.yousendit.com/) )
YouSendIt.com offer free space for any file that you upload. Basically, you upload, and it sends a link to your file to the email address that you provide before (it IS before, isn't it?) uploading. Your file stays there for somewhere in the region of a week.
~MegaUpload ( http://www.megaupload.com )
Here, your file stays in storage for a bit longer. The only drawback is that if your file has no downloads in 30 days, it will be removed. However, if you have a premium account, I believe it will stay put for longer.

PAID:
Most servers have paid packages available, including Geocities and Freewebs.

A few others are:
http://www.ionhosting.com/
http://www.powweb.com/
http://www.spymac.com/
http://www.wiserhosting.com/

Web Extras:
Bravenet ( http://www.bravenet.com/ ) -- Guestbooks, polls, royalty free graphics, and just about everything else you could ever want.

Ezboard ( http://www.ezboard.com/ ) -- Forums for free, though with Gold membership, a very nice lack of adverts is included. Good HCI. Simple to use.

Livejournal ( http://www.livejournal.com/ ) -- Provides weblogs for people who want an online journal.

Zipping:
Try Winzip.com (http://www.winzip.com/) for a good and easy to use zip program, "WinZip". :D

OTHER STUFF:
Since Blue-San has kindly put the audio tutorials back up, I've asked for his permission to place a link to his thread here in the Resources post. His two radioplays were something that I learned a lot from, so, it's with that, that I am now including these in this thread. Seriously huge thank you to Blue for making these.

Newbie and Producer Guides to Politeness and Do's and Donts (http://www.voiceacting.co.uk/board/viewtopic.php?t=2655)

I think I've covered just about everything here, but, there are bound to be a few glaring omissions. If you guys spot anything, just post here with a link or extra information. (Thanks. ^_^)

Well,

1) It helps if you speak properly. Please don't use netspeak, dear, because then I can't understand you, which means I can't help you.

2) If you want help, read the tutorials. That's what they're there for.

3) Where voice acting is concerned, try recording yourself and uploading so we can give you critique and help you get better at what you're doing.

A crack can either: "plug a gap" in the coding by inserting registration details or it can be a text document with registration numbers for your software in it, which you insert when the registration dialogue box comes up. It can also stop ads coming up, if your software has ads. XD I have a piece of software on a floppy, for example, for download accelerator, which has banner ads on it if you aren't registered.

It also stops that irritating registration box coming up everytime you start the software. And makes all the parts that should function, actually work, if your program has been in someway disabled -- eg, save disable on Adobe Premier. ^^

Is there a place to download OSTs of the unknown animes? IE: mahoujin guru guru?

Jing
05-15-2005, 11:34 AM
I have no idea... try finding them and buying them. If the anime's unknown, then it won't as popular, therefore it may not have a downloadable OST. Try finding it and buying it.

Look at http://www.yesasia.com
I buy my anime stuff there.

Studio Ghibli started to use Toonz since the realization of the movie Princess Mononoke directed by Hayao Miyazaki. Then they continued to use it for inking & painting and composing My Neighbors the Yamadas directed by Isao Takahata, and the masterpiece Spirited Away, directed by Hayao Miyazaki, Golden Bear Award winner at the Berlin International Film Festival of 2002 and Academy Award winner as best animated feature film of 2003. See more details...

P.S. You're message help board has been really helpful also, but I don't really understand how to do it.

First, I'm going to correct your grammar. Because I'm like that. XD It's "your", not "you're". "Your" indicates possessive. "You're" indicates, "you are". Apostrophes in a word show missing letters. <3

Second, it's a thread.

Third. I'm assuming you know how to record. It's easy enough to do in Goldwave. (File > Open New File > 44100 Hz/5 minutes/Stereo > Okay. Then click the record button.)

Fourth. Go to the second page to find a Lame Encoder, which you need in order to save as MP3 in Goldwave. Download the encoder and unzip it into the Goldwave folder in C:\Program Files\. This will allow you to save as MP3. <3 However, this carry on isn't neccessary if you use Cool Edit, since MP3 is presented in the drop-down option box in the save option on the file menu.

Fifth and finally, to send as an audition, make sure it's 44100Hz (44KHz), preferably at 64 or above kbps (you'll see it in the Goldwave save box, trust me.) Make sure you've put them into a folder labelled with your name and the character name -- eg, "Fiona_Hermione-Granger". Put in a text file with your contact details and name. And zip the folder (second page -- WinZip) by right clicking the folder, hovering over "WinZip" in the options presented, and then click "Add folder to zip file, 'your-name_character-name'". That'll zip it.

Then send via email or instant messaging program.

It's honestly not that difficult. <3

SOUND IDEAS (http://www.sound-ideas.com/)

For any of you going into a course or career of audio production/editing, chances are you’re gonna run into the Sound Ideas series of sound effects CDs.

So for a head start, here’s the free official Soundeffects Search Program you can download from their site, where you can type in any object (cars), creatures (ducks) or actions (face punch) you want a sound effect of, and it will list every CD that has it (you’ll be using the 6000 series quite a bit as its their strongest one)

What are some good resources for anime scripts? If I'm repeating an already asked question, sorry! I searched the forum and didn't see it.

Are we just supposed to write our own scripts or copy down from the DVD? Any help is greatly appreciated. ^_^

Thanks,
Cheri

I always write my own scripts. Not everyone can translate directly from Japanese, but worse case scenario you can use a fansub.

Thanks for the reply. I'm new to this whole fan-dubbing thing, so what do you mean by fansub? Is that a type of file or are you referring to copying down the subtitles from a fan-subbed anime?

Fansubs are anime's with the subtitles on the video, and with subtitles only because the video is usually a different language (not english). I wouldn't recommend compying word from word from a fansub because the words will most likely not match up withthe characters lip movement.

So when you're writing a script and using a fansub as reference, you should always alter each line so that it makes sense, matches with the characters movement, and fits the story.

How does one do audio mixing on Goldwave or Audacity? Can it really be done and done well, namely is it worth it to use for audio mixing? Cause I thought I try some freeware before I do anything else when it comes to audio mixing.

I don't know if this is where to post this, but I am looking for a new, better quality microphone, preferably one that plugs into the microphone portal of my computer. My current mic is okay, but I want a better quality one.

Any suggestions for what I should buy are appreciated. <3

I just want to add that VideoPad Video Editor (the basic one anyway) is also a great freeware program, if people want to check it out. <3
